ONE OF THE BEST PLACE TO CAMPING

Tucked deep in a spillover of land that extends from the Yala national park wilderness, Wild Trails is a camping experience with a touch of creature comfort that today’s traveler looks for. The trail leading upto the campsite truly lives up to its name. At dusk you can easily experience the excitement of the jungle that cocoons the camp. The roaming elephants that cross the trail no sooner the area begins to darken with the falling night sky. The bark of the deer as the night thickens, ever alert of the nocturnal hunt of the Leopard. And ofcourse the soothing sound of the constant Night Jar, living upto it’s other name as the ‘Marble Dropper’.

Wild Trails is the kind of experience that one would otherwise experience camping inside the park. Well, the secure, large 16 x 10 feet tents and the comfortable bedding and amenities can easily make you forget that you are in the wilderness. But, if the cries of the wild at night do remind where you are, you will have comfort in the fact that you’ve got the company of seasoned staff who know the territory like the back of their palms.

STAFF

Most of the well-trained staff have been recruited from the area, to keep up with the concept of ‘sustainable tourism’ that helps fuel the economy in the area. The majority of them are also part time farmers, who are into paddy and Chena cultivation, and are well versed with nature and the movements of big and small game alike.

EXPERIENCE

The concept of Wild Trails wasn’t born out of a business plan. Rather, it was a passion for camping deep in the jungles and experiencing nature in its purest and most rustic form that prompted the architects of the idea to share that experience. Having understood that the discerning traveler of today would want to savour the same experience, but with the modern comforts, Wild Trails, which began as an experimental idea over a decade ago, has today become a popular ‘glamping’ destination.

TASTEFUL EXPERIENCES

Savour delicious Sri Lankan delights freshly cooked by our in-house Chef who carefully selects fresh produce from the Chena cultivation farmers in the area. If you fancy your meal under the open skies in the evening, then you can always make a simple request and we will be at your service.

Wild Trails is located on the Yoda Kandiya-Sithul Pawwa road. It’s approximately about half hour’s drive from the Tissamaharama town.

Take a salt water dip

Kirinda Beach

Being far from the beaches of the renowned down-south coastal stretch doesn’t mean you cannot soak-in the sea. Half an hour’s drive away from the camp, in our own jeeps, is the Kirinda beach. A perfect location for a sea bath on a hot afternoon. After cooling off, you may want to take a quick walk down the annals of history, and discover the facts behind the legend of Sri Lanka’s most revered King, whose story begins on Kirinda beach nearly two millennia ago, who grows up in the surrounding little kingdom of his father – the provincial king, before he marches the then seat of power, Anuradhapura, in the North Central province to defeat the mighty Chola armies of South Indian origin, after nearly a century of rule.

An ancient city revered by several religions

Kataragama

There are still remnants left of the palaces and the irrigation works and temples. Most significant and mysterious of these religious sites is Kataragama, which is a 45 minute drive from the camp, where, to date thousands of pilgrims flock to worship Lord Skanda (Murugesh), one of the key Hindu deities. Like today, mysteriously, the predominantly Buddhist Kings and armies of the Ruhuna kingdom first went to seek the blessings at the shrine of Lord Skanda in Kataragama, before marching on to fight the South Indian invaders, who were predominantly Hindu themselves. So, beyond the wild life there is a lot of mystery and history to explore, and discover how a tiny kingdom of not much significance went onto play such an important part in the glorious history and civilization of ancient Sri Lanka.

Thissamaharama Temple

It is easy to forget that Yala and the region around it have a rich history and culture, because the area today is all about wildlife & safaris. But more than two millennia ago, this was a seat of power for a small provincial kingdom with a big & courageous heart, called Ruhuna (meaning South). With Anuradhapura & then Polonnaruwa, the ancient seats of power, in the North Central province being under attack & invasion from the massive armies of Pandava & Cholan Kings from South India, it is this little kingdom that always gave hope to and saw the rise of princes that would go onto re-take power, despite the massive odds in numbers.
